Wilderness Motorhomes vs Campervan Village

This is the widest equipment gap between any two operators in this market. Wilderness runs seven Fiat Ducato motorhomes with standing headroom, a fixed cassette toilet, central gas-electric heating, memory foam bedding on a slatted frame, a hot shower and 120 litres of fresh water on every model. Campervan Village runs three Toyota Voxy campervans with no heater of any kind, no bedding of any kind, no 240-volt hookup, no hot water, and a fridge on only one of the three — the other two cool with a 20-litre esky that needs ice bought along the way. Both fleets are listed as certified self-contained: Wilderness with a cassette flush toilet in every model, Campervan Village citing only the old NZA 5465 standard, without saying what kind of toilet its vans carry — so on a Campervan Village van, check the warrant card before relying on it. But one is a motorhome you can live in through a wet South Island week, and the other is a minivan with a mattress in it.

Depot coverage is the one structural axis Campervan Village wins outright. Campervan Village holds three depots — Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown — against Wilderness's two at Auckland and Christchurch only. A one-way finishing at Queenstown airport is an ordinary Campervan Village booking and is not one Wilderness can take, and that single depot decides entire South Island itineraries. It is also the only operator here with no Sunday service at any depot: Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm, Saturday 9am to noon, closed Sundays. Wilderness runs 08:30 to 15:45 for pickup and 08:30 to 14:30 for return, seven days a week. Cancellation runs the other way — Campervan Village tapers from full refund above 31 days through a sliding scale to the full rental on the day, while Wilderness drops from a full refund to nothing at seven days out, or twenty-one during the Christmas peak, with no middle step.

The review gap is the largest in this market and it runs in the same direction as the equipment. Wilderness holds a 4.9 weighted average from 1,513 Google reviews across its two depots and a 4.8 from 186 New Zealand-only Trustpilot reviews. Campervan Village holds a 1.7 weighted average from 19 Google reviews across three depots — no depot independently reaches 2.0 — and a 2.9 from 135 Trustpilot reviews that pool eleven Australian depots with the three New Zealand ones. The Google samples are not comparable in size: 1,513 against 19 is a seventy-to-one ratio, and a small sample is structurally volatile. But Wilderness's two depots agree at 4.9 each across a decade of traffic, and Campervan Village's three depots agree below 2.0 across a year of traffic. Where the Google complaints overlap, vehicle condition at handover and communication during the hire appear on both profiles — it is the frequency and the severity that diverge.
