Waka Campa: An Honest Review for Renters

The three Explorers list a heater, but the FAQ confirms it requires 230-volt mains and does not run on the house battery. At a powered campsite that is fine. At a freedom-camping site — where the fleet's self-containment is designed to take you — there is no heat overnight. The Outrider is the exception: Waka Campa describes its diesel heater as 'the only one in our fleet'.

On the Explorers the shower is a pull-out tap at the rear of the vehicle and a solar shower bag, both used outdoors. The Outrider adds 'an indoor cold shower with tray, drain and curtain', but it seats and sleeps three rather than four. For a summer trip the outdoor shower is a minor constraint; for the South Island in winter, the choice between an Explorer and the Outrider is the decision.

Risk Taker is included and freezes NZ$4,500 on the card as both bond and excess for the full trip. The excess applies per claim regardless of fault, refunded only if the other party is later found liable. Overhead, underbody and water damage are excluded at this tier, as are tyre punctures, cuts and bursts; a windscreen counts as ordinary damage, up to the NZ$4,500.

Peace of Mind at NZ$45 a day removes the bond and the excess, and adds windscreen repair, tyre and battery cover, plus breakdown accommodation up to the daily rate you paid. The website ticks an alternative vehicle after a breakdown or accident, but the policy document describes no entitlement to one. Overhead, underbody and water damage, and the five named roads, stay excluded on both tiers.

All three depots run through the app with a free airport shuttle. There is no counter and no vehicle walkthrough — instructional videos are sent beforehand and the keys are collected self-service. That is quicker than a queue and less reassuring than a person demonstrating the gas and the water.

Cancellation runs on a five-step ladder: free at 30 days or more, then 25, 50, 75 and 100 per cent of the total as the pickup date approaches, with the full amount forfeited inside three days. One-way fees are not published — the company quotes on request, so the total for a one-way booking is not final until you hear back.

Both insurance tiers exclude five named roads: Skippers Road, Ninety Mile Beach, Ball Hut Road, north of Colville on the Coromandel, and Wanaka-Mt Aspiring Road beyond the Treble Cone exit. Beach driving and water crossings are also excluded regardless of road.

These are the same roads most operators in this market name, governed by road name rather than by drivetrain — none of the four models is cleared for unsealed roads. If your route includes gravel, check the specific stretch against the contract rather than assuming the list is exhaustive.

The Google entries are overwhelmingly positive and consistent across all three depots: clean vans, responsive WhatsApp support, and a self-service pickup renters describe as fast and straightforward. Pre-trip instructional videos are singled out more than once as genuinely useful.

The negative minority clusters on vehicle condition at handover — a check engine light, a water pump fault, a stove or fridge not working. The complaints describe mechanical readiness rather than service attitude, and in most cases the company's response is still described as helpful even when the vehicle was not.

There is no Trustpilot page, no Reddit thread and only four TripAdvisor reviews across all three depots. The one second signal is Motorhome Republic, an aggregator that collects reviews from travellers who booked through its site: roughly 79 per cent from over 75 reviews, with only 23 per cent at five stars.

That gap is common — aggregator customers may book the cheapest tier disproportionately and arrive with different expectations. It does not prove the Google number is inflated. But without a second platform score, there is nothing to adjudicate between, and that is a limitation the reader should carry.
