The rule of thumb: book early for peak season and later for the quiet months. Peak-season vans sell out and rates firm up as availability tightens, so reserve months ahead; off-season demand is soft, so deals linger and last-minute works.

Certified self-contained (green warrant)

A vehicle certified to carry its own fresh water, hold its own waste, and let you use a toilet without public facilities for at least three days. Only the green warrant counts — rental vehicles have needed one since 7 December 2024, and all vehicles since 7 June 2026 — and it requires a toilet fixed to the vehicle, so a portable one does not qualify. The certificate comes with a green card that must be displayed. Certification is per vehicle, not per rental company.

Freedom camping

Camping on public land outside a formal campsite. It is not a general right and the rules differ by landowner: on public conservation land it is allowed unless DOC restricts or prohibits it, and DOC's reserves are closed unless listed as open, while most council districts restrict it and generally require a certified self-contained vehicle where it is permitted at all. Always obey the signage — restrictions are not always signposted, and breaching them carries an infringement fine.

Road User Charges (RUC)

A distance-based charge New Zealand levies on diesel vehicles, because diesel is not taxed at the pump the way petrol is. It is why a diesel camper's cheaper pump price does not translate into a cheaper trip. Rental companies handle RUC for you, but check whether it is bundled into the daily rate or billed separately on the distance you drove.

Holiday park vs DOC campsite

The two kinds of paid overnight stop. Holiday parks are commercial, with powered sites, showers and kitchens, and cost the most. DOC campsites are run by the Department of Conservation, are far cheaper and often free, and range from serviced to a long-drop and a water tank. Both accept non-self-contained vehicles, though individual DOC sites vary.

CDW and excess

Collision Damage Waiver caps what you owe if the camper is damaged. It is not insurance and the cap is not zero — the cap is the excess, and it is usually held against your credit card for the whole rental. The paid upgrade lowers it. Compare the excess figure, not the name of the package.

Unsealed road exclusion

Nearly every New Zealand rental agreement restricts unsealed roads and names specific exclusions — Skippers Canyon, Ninety Mile Beach and Ball Hut Road among them. Driving an excluded road voids your cover regardless of whether the vehicle is four-wheel drive. Read the named list on your own contract rather than assuming the drivetrain decides it.

One-way fee

Charged when you return the camper somewhere other than where you collected it. In New Zealand this often decides which itinerary is cheapest, because a one-way between islands also means a Cook Strait ferry fare for the vehicle.
