JUCY vs Big Little Campers

Both companies convert vans rather than import large motorhomes, both hire from Auckland and Christchurch, both build their middle models on the Toyota Hiace, and both include bedding on every booking. The liability ladders land in much the same place: JUCY’s default tier holds NZ$3,000 to NZ$7,500 by model for bookings made on or after 1 May 2026, and Big Little holds NZ$5,000 on The Little One and The Big One, rising to NZ$7,500 on The Biggest One. Both sell that down to nothing — Big Little for NZ$35 a day on the two smaller vans and NZ$50 on the Ducato, JUCY through a Comprehensive tier that still carries a NZ$125 claims administration fee. The excess is not what separates them.

The booking form is. JUCY sells seven models from three airport gateways with no minimum hire; Big Little sells three from two depots (fleet vehicle count not published), and its booking engine returns nothing under seven days. For a long weekend, or for any itinerary that starts or finishes in Queenstown, there is no decision to weigh — JUCY is the only one of the two you can book. Certification separates what is left. Big Little lists all three of its vans with a green warrant, the certification rental vehicles have needed since 7 December 2024, while JUCY lists five of its seven as self-contained and names the Crib and the Cloudbreak as not. That is not a quality gap between the companies: it is a verification job one fleet hands you and the other removes, and it decides where you may legally sleep.

Weather capability then splits along one model rather than one company. Between the two fleets, only The Biggest One — a 6.4-metre Fiat Ducato with a diesel heater — heats the living space away from mains power. JUCY warms the cab alone on six of its seven models and qualifies the six-berth Big Kahuna as heating the cabin when connected to a powered site; The Little One and The Big One run a plug-in 240-volt heater under the same restriction. For a February trip in the north that is a footnote. For a South Island loop in May it is the booking. Compare the two on the cost of the whole trip rather than on the daily rate: Big Little includes towels, cooking equipment, unlimited kilometres, additional drivers and a one-way between its depots at no charge, while JUCY approves each one-way individually, prices it by vehicle and direction, and bills by calendar day, so a mid-afternoon collection burns a full day.
