Travellers Autobarn vs Waka Campa

Both are budget van converters rather than motorhome importers, and both work Auckland and Christchurch. Travellers Autobarn hires five petrol automatics from those two cities; Waka Campa runs one Toyota HiAce design at three vehicle ages, plus the newer three-berth Outrider, and adds Queenstown. Only one vehicle across the two fleets warms the van away from mains power: no Travellers Autobarn model carries a built-in heater at all, Waka Campa’s three Explorers have an electric heater that needs a 230-volt hookup, and its Outrider has a diesel one. Neither fleet is cleared for unsealed roads either, and the two excluded-road lists overlap on Skippers Road, Ninety Mile Beach, Ball Hut Road and the Coromandel north of Colville. On paper they are close.

What separates them is where you may legally sleep. Waka Campa lists all four of its models, the three Explorers and the Outrider, as certified self-contained with a fixed toilet. Travellers Autobarn lists four of its five, the Chubby, HiTop, Kuga and Hi5, as self-contained, but its own terms, effective 19 June 2026, say that for ‘certain campervans’ the certificate depends on a NZ$50 portable toilet issued at pick-up. The Department of Conservation states that certification now requires a toilet fixed to the floor of the vehicle. No warrant number, issue date or standard is published for those four models. That is not a quality difference, it is a legal one about which overnight sites will take you. Over ten nights the campsite fees are the larger number, so weigh these two as a total trip cost rather than as a daily rate.

The second split is what the included cover leaves you owing. Travellers Autobarn’s Standard Protection holds a NZ$3,500 bond that is not a cap: a single-vehicle rollover or write-off leaves the hirer liable up to NZ$50,000. Protection Plus at NZ$35 a day cuts that to NZ$10,000, and the Value Pack at NZ$45 a day to nil. Waka Campa’s included Risk Taker freezes NZ$4,500 as both bond and excess, applied per claim regardless of fault, and Peace of Mind at NZ$45 a day removes both. Neither upgrade touches overhead, underbody or water damage, which stays with the hirer at every tier. One route detail settles some itineraries outright: Travellers Autobarn excludes Crown Range Road, the direct Wanaka to Queenstown crossing. Where either company’s reviews record a bad trip the subject is usually the vehicle itself, so inspect the fittings before you drive away.
