Britz vs Travellers Autobarn

Both restrict you to sealed roads, and both name the same exclusions: Ninety Mile Beach, Skippers Road, Ball Hut Road, the Coromandel north of Colville, and Crown Range Road, which is sealed, is a state highway and is the direct Wanaka to Queenstown crossing. Ski-field access roads are barred from 1 June to 31 October by both. None of that separates them. Both also describe a toilet as portable on self-contained listings, though not in the same way: Britz’s own copy calls the attached 12-litre hideaway toilet in the HiTop and Voyager ‘affixed portable’ and ‘fixed portable’, while Travellers Autobarn’s terms make the certificate on ‘certain campervans’ — its Chubby, HiTop, Kuga and Hi5 are the four it lists as self-contained — depend on a NZ$50 porta potti handed over at pick-up, the kind of toilet the regulator says does not meet the requirements. On either, check the warrant card before relying on it.

The fleets do not sit in the same tier. Four of Britz’s six models, the Venturer, Wanderer, Odyssey and Navigator, carry a fixed toilet, a shower and gas or diesel heat in the living area, three of them 2023 to 2026 European motorhomes from Laika and Etrusco. The HiTop and Voyager drop the shower and the living-area heat, keeping a 12-litre hideaway toilet and heat in the driver’s cab only, so a Voyager’s berth count tells you nothing about its equipment. Travellers Autobarn runs five petrol automatics on bases the company publishes as 2006 to 2016, and no model has a built-in heater — the free winter pack issued from May to September holds an electric heater the company states works only at a powered campsite.

For a South Island route outside high summer, that is the decision, and it is not a quality gap: weighted across depots, Google rates Travellers Autobarn 4.6 from 691 reviews against Britz’s 4.2 from 2,761. The liability figures then invert what they suggest. Britz records a card authority for NZ$7,500, cut to NZ$5,000 on the HiTop and Voyager, and that figure is the liability itself. Travellers Autobarn holds a smaller NZ$3,500 bond, but under the included Standard Protection a rollover or write-off leaves the hirer liable up to NZ$50,000, reduced to NZ$10,000 by Protection Plus at NZ$35 a day and to nil by the Value Pack at NZ$45 a day.
