Britz vs Wendekreisen

Both companies publish their entire New Zealand fleet as certified self-contained, include bedding, and restrict you by a named list of banned roads rather than by a blanket ban on gravel. The difference is where the equipment stops.

Britz splits six models by equipment rather than by size. The Venturer, Wanderer, Odyssey and Navigator have a fixed toilet, a shower and gas or diesel heat in the living area; the HiTop and Voyager have a 12-litre hideaway toilet, no shower and heat in the driver’s cab alone. Those two are also where the company’s fleet-wide certified claim is least clear, because Britz’s own copy calls their toilet portable and the green warrant needs one permanently fixed in the vehicle. Wendekreisen draws no such line: the company lists all 11 categories, down to the Budget 2 tier, with a shower, fixed cassette toilet, hot water and a heater. Its range varies by transmission, heating fuel and vehicle age instead — older LDV V80 manuals on LPG heat at the Budget end, newer automatics on diesel heat at the Koru Star end.

The cost of that consistency is geography. Wendekreisen collects from Auckland and Christchurch only, and another city needs prior arrangement and a NZ$550 relocation surcharge. Britz runs Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown, each with an airport shuttle, but charges a flat NZ$270 location fee at Queenstown even on a same-city pickup and return, and prices a one-way leg by route and season between NZ$100 and NZ$300 for pickups up to 31 March 2027. The road lists then cut the other way: Britz bans Crown Range Road, fully sealed and the direct link between Wanaka and Queenstown, plus any unsealed road over 12 kilometres to a campground, while Wendekreisen names Ninety Mile Beach, Skippers Road, unsealed Tasman Valley Road and Mount Aspiring Road beyond Treble Cone, then permits every other public road. Plan the route first and the vehicle second.
