Travellers Autobarn vs Wendekreisen

Both companies hire from Auckland and Christchurch and from nowhere else, so neither can start or finish your trip in Queenstown. Both include unlimited kilometres, and both hold Google averages in the mid-4s across several hundred depot reviews. Their Trustpilot samples are far smaller — 14 entries against 39 — and neither carries a verdict, though the complaints on both describe a fault appearing after departure and an argument about the response. The difference here is not the depot map. It is what the vehicle contains.

Wendekreisen publishes all 11 of its current categories as certified self-contained, each with a shower, a fixed cassette toilet, hot water and a heater: a 2kW diesel parking heater on the Koru range, a 1.9kW LPG heater on the Budget models. Travellers Autobarn fits no built-in heater to any of its five models, and for May to September pick-ups it supplies a free winter pack whose electric heater, the company states, works only at a powered campsite. The self-contained badge it puts on the Chubby, HiTop, Kuga and Hi5 depends, under its terms for ‘certain campervans’, on a NZ$50 portable toilet issued at pick-up. A green warrant requires a toilet fixed to the floor of the vehicle, and the regulator says portable toilets do not meet the requirements. That is not a comfort difference — it is a legal one, and it decides where you are allowed to park overnight.

The rest is route and kit. Travellers Autobarn permits sealed roads and access roads under 500 metres, then bars five named routes outright, including Crown Range Road — a sealed state highway and the direct crossing from Wanaka to Queenstown. Wendekreisen allows every public road outside its own named blacklist, and puts bedding, road-user charges, airport transfers and one-way hire between the two depots inside its published inclusion list. Its insurance sits outside that list, compulsory at NZ$25 a day. Travellers Autobarn supplies bedding and a cooking kit with its campervans on a living-equipment charge that is mandatory rather than optional, and neither the Station Wagon nor the Chubby has a built-in cooker — the Chubby cooks on a portable gas cooker. Weigh these two over the whole trip, with inclusions and campsite nights counted, rather than side by side on a daily rate.
