The closest genuinely free, council-run options are both at Babinda, roughly 55km and fifty minutes south: Rotary Park and the Boulders, each capped at 72 hours with a 14-day stand-down before you may return. North-west toward the Tablelands, Mareeba Shire's Rifle Creek Rest Area at Mt Molloy is a legal low-cost stop about 85km out and roughly an hour and a half's drive, with a 48-hour maximum and a donation asked rather than a set rate.

Can I take a hire campervan to Cape Tribulation and the Daintree?

Yes, in a standard two-wheel-drive van. The road north through Port Douglas and Mossman is sealed all the way to the Daintree River, the cable ferry carries campervans and motorhomes across, and the sealed road continues from there to Cape Tribulation. What you cannot assume is the stretch beyond it: the Bloomfield Track is unsealed and most rental contracts restrict that kind of road, so check your own agreement rather than the map. Book a site on the Cape Trib side rather than planning a late crossing back, because the ferry does not run around the clock.

Do I actually need a four-wheel drive in Cairns?

For the trips most people do from here, no. Port Douglas, the Daintree as far as Cape Tribulation, the Atherton Tablelands, Mission Beach and the whole run south to Townsville and Brisbane are sealed. A four-wheel drive earns its place only on Cape York, on the Bloomfield Track north of Cape Tribulation, and on the unsealed western half of the Savannah Way — and even then the contract matters more than the drivetrain, because a 4WD hired under a standard agreement can still be barred from a specific track. The four-wheel-drive end of the Cairns row is thin and comes from the two big motorhome brands and from Mighty, and every one of those vehicles carries a minimum driver age of 21, so it is a trip to book well ahead rather than arrange at the counter.

Where can I legally spend the first night out of Cairns?

Not in the city. Cairns Regional Council bans sleeping overnight in a campervan on all the land it controls — roadsides, the Esplanade, parks, car parks, sporting grounds and beaches — and enforces it with on-the-spot fines, so a first night in Cairns itself means a booked caravan park. The nearest free, council-run alternatives are at Babinda, about fifty minutes south, capped at 72 hours with a fortnight's stand-down before you can return; Mareeba Shire's Rifle Creek Rest Area at Mt Molloy, about an hour and a half north-west toward the Tablelands, allows 48 hours and asks for a donation. Douglas Shire, covering Port Douglas and the Daintree, sets its own rules and we have not verified them, so look those up separately rather than assuming Cairns's position carries north.

What does hiring in the wet season actually look like here?

The wet runs roughly November to April: heat, humidity, heavy monsoonal rain and a real cyclone risk, with roads north of the city liable to flood or close at short notice. The depot row contracts with it — Britz, Maui, Apollo and Mighty drop Sunday trading from 1 October to 31 March, so a Sunday collection or return simply is not available there for half the year. The counterintuitive part is the price shape: January sits at the top of the curve above because it is the national summer school holiday, not because Cairns is at its best. If the dates are flexible and the weather is the point, the dry months either side are the better trade.

What are the rules on taking a Cairns van interstate?

Interstate travel itself is allowed by the companies here; the conditions attach to the route rather than the border. A one-way needs an operator with a depot at both ends and, in most cases, a minimum hire length tied to that specific pair — Travellers Autobarn's one-way minimum is much longer than its same-city one, and Star RV approves every one-way individually and excludes Perth. Direction matters for Britz, Maui and Apollo: their higher one-way fee tier attaches to trips starting in Darwin, Broome, Alice Springs or Perth, so a Cairns start sits on the standard tier. If the plan is the Savannah Way to Darwin, the remote-travel conditions in the contract will matter more than the state line — long unsealed stretches, big gaps between fuel, and in at least one company's relocation product an explicit no-night-driving condition.

Can I collect a van outside depot hours in Cairns?

Only in a couple of cases, and it is worth confirming when you book. Spaceships runs contactless self-service pickup at its Portsmith depot around the clock, which is the only fully published out-of-hours option here. Campervan Village lists after-hours pickup and unattended drop-off as available, noting additional fees may apply. Britz's help centre says after-hours collection can be arranged in advance with the branch, though its main branch page does not repeat that, so reconfirm it directly. JUCY and Star RV both state vehicles must be collected and returned within opening hours, Cruisin Motorhomes publishes no after-hours pickup and offers only an advance-arranged unmanned key-drop for Sunday returns, and Travellers Autobarn, Maui, Apollo, Mighty and Camperman publish nothing either way — an absent policy is not proof there is none, so ask before you book a late flight.
