Campervan Village: An Honest Review for Renters

Campervan Village markets a A$0-a-day Standard Liability tier, but the company's own rental agreement states it is available only through selected travel agents, not on a direct booking. Direct renters instead choose between three paid tiers, LR One, Cover One and Cover Plus, priced separately for 2WD and 4WD vehicles.

For a 2WD camper, LR One runs a A$500 bond against a A$3,000 excess; Cover Plus removes the bond and drops the excess to A$1, but a A$500 minimum bond still applies at Alice Springs, Broome, Perth, Darwin or Exmouth at any tier. A non-refundable fee applies to every bond.

Depot hours are set on the website rather than in the rental agreement itself. Outside them, the company charges A$195 to process an after-hours pickup, A$100 for an after-hours return, and a further A$195 on top of either if the day falls on a public holiday.

Cancellation is free until 31 days before pickup, then scales from 10 percent of the rental (minimum A$150) at 30 to 15 days out, to the full rental for a no-show or same-day cancellation. The card-processing fee is never refunded, and a general late return separately adds a flat A$150.

Even the 4x4 models must never be driven off-road under the company's own rental agreement; unsealed roads are permitted only where the surface will not damage the vehicle. Beaches, sand dunes, river crossings, flooded roads and closed roads are prohibited outright, for every vehicle in the fleet without exception.

The D5 Adventure Camper is additionally barred from Gibb River Road, Cape Leveque, the Bungle Bungles and Cape York, tracks the other 4x4 models may use with the company's written approval. A vehicle the tracking device shows in a prohibited area attracts a fee of up to A$2,000.

Campervan Village Pty Ltd was registered as a company in Queensland in 2016, a separate legal entity from Wicked Campers, which says it was founded in Brisbane in 2000. Campervan Village's own website makes no mention of the relationship anywhere on its About, FAQ or terms pages.

Independent sources, including a customer dispute thread and a separate consumer investigation, describe the two as sister companies rather than a confirmed parent-subsidiary pair; company registration records alone could not settle the exact ownership structure. Nothing found ties Campervan Village's own vans to Wicked Campers' well-known provocative livery and slogans.

The recurring theme in the Google read is how the company handles something breaking down in a remote location: third-party repairs get authorised without argument, and renters describe being kept informed throughout, valuable given how far the nearest mechanic can sit from many of these routes.

Three specific accounts of this kind appear only on the company's own site, so they are self-published rather than independently verified. They also describe the mattresses as comfortable and the kitchens as complete, a detail worth reading alongside the fact that no model actually includes bedding.

The five-star third of Trustpilot centres on low-cost access to the fleet without the heavy bond larger networks charge, on the off-road tier as a cheap route to outback and coastal tracks a standard vehicle cannot reach, and on occasional unannounced upgrades to a larger model.

The one-star third centres on missing rather than broken basics: a van with no privacy curtains at all, another with no power outlet anywhere in the living area, and on customer service described as uncooperative during a border-closure cancellation dispute a state regulator had to intervene in.

A single company producing a near-5 self-published figure on one hand and a 2.9 counted figure on the other is not really a contradiction: Trustpilot is the larger, independently verifiable sample, and its bimodal split says the outcome depends heavily on which model and which depot a renter draws.

Reddit carries no first-hand Australian account, most likely because discussion is filed under the parent brand, Wicked Campers, rather than because of any quality problem. Weigh the verified Trustpilot sample over Google's uncounted rating, read the excess ladder before choosing a cover tier, and confirm what each booked model includes.
