Under the state Act that means a booked metropolitan caravan park for night one unless you have the landowner's approval to be somewhere else. If you would rather start moving, DBCA's bookable campgrounds in Lane Poole Reserve near Dwellingup are about an hour and a bit south-east and charge a camping fee — a licensed, legitimate alternative, and worth checking on WA Park Stay for availability before you drive out. Main Roads WA also signs 24-hour rest areas up Indian Ocean Drive, with Bashford Nature Reserve and Wedge Lookout the nearest, but those are fatigue stops explicitly described as not intended for camping, and the guide naming them is old enough that we would re-check it against Main Roads' current rest-area map before relying on either.

Can you hire a campervan in Perth at 18?

Can you pick up a campervan in Perth and drop it off somewhere else?

Can I take a Perth van up to Broome, or across to Darwin or the east coast?

Sometimes, and it depends heavily on the company. Britz, Maui, Apollo and Mighty run one-ways across their shared network, which includes Broome, Darwin, Adelaide and the east-coast cities, but a trip starting in Perth falls into their higher one-way fee tier and every origin-destination pair carries its own minimum booking length. My flight lands in the evening — can I still collect the van that day?

Almost certainly not, unless you have arranged it in advance with a company that offers after-hours access. The Redcliffe depot shared by Britz, Maui, Apollo and Mighty closes at 3:30pm and asks for vehicles to be collected an hour before that; JUCY and Star RV close at 3pm on weekdays and 2pm at weekends. Britz publishes after-hours access on request through the branch, and Travellers Autobarn will arrange it through reservations but wants at least a week's notice, so it is not something to sort out from the arrivals hall; Cruisin Motorhomes publishes no after-hours pickup at all. Spaceships' contactless handover sidesteps the question entirely. For everyone else an evening arrival means a hotel night in Perth and a morning pickup — book that room when you book the van, not after.

Can I drive a hire campervan on unsealed roads in Western Australia?

That is set by your rental agreement rather than by the road itself. Every company in this market names the surfaces its vehicles may be used on, and unsealed road is usually where the line is drawn for a 2WD camper; going past it typically voids the damage cover you have paid for. Only three of the companies here offer 4x4 campers, and even those carry their own list of excluded tracks. If your itinerary includes a gravel park access road, read the clause first and get the answer in writing from the vendor before you leave the depot.

Do I need a 4WD for the Pinnacles or the Coral Coast?

No. Indian Ocean Drive up to Cervantes and the loop road through the Pinnacles are sealed, and so is the highway north to Exmouth — a standard 2WD camper handles both without difficulty. The same goes for the south-west and the run down to Esperance. The trips that genuinely need a 4x4 are inland and in the far north, on Karijini's internal tracks and in the Kimberley, and those are undertakings of a different order from a Coral Coast run in both driving and preparation.

Where can I legally spend the first night out of Perth?

In a licensed caravan park, in most cases. Western Australia's Caravan Parks and Camping Grounds Act 1995 makes it an offence to camp in a vehicle outside a licensed caravan park without the landowner's approval, and that applies across greater Perth rather than in one council area — so there is no free, legal option at the city edge. Because every depot closes by mid-afternoon, the first night tends to be a metropolitan park anyway. The 24-hour rest areas Main Roads WA signs along Indian Ocean Drive are a legal stop but are described as fatigue stops rather than campgrounds, and we would check the current Main Roads map before counting on any particular one.

How far ahead should I book a July or a September departure?

Further ahead than feels necessary, for either. July and August are the dry-season window for the north, so the winter that empties depots in Melbourne fills them here, and July is the dearest month on the curve above. September is harder on availability than on price: sell-out pressure hits 39 per cent, because wildflower season, the whale migration and workable weather at both ends of the state all land in the same few weeks. Treat a booking made inside a couple of months for either as a late booking. And note the trap in December, which looks like the soft month on price and is the single hardest month here to get a van at all.
