Mighty: An Honest Review for Renters

Standard cover leaves you liable, and deposited, for A$3,500 on MightyLITE and on Mighty vans without a shower, A$5,000 on the toilet-and-shower models, and A$8,000 on the 4WD. On Low Road that deposit is debited to your card at pickup rather than merely held — thl's Australian agreement records a card authority only once a paid tier brings the liability to nil.

High Road cover reduces the 2WD liability to zero at A$40 to A$55 per day depending on tier. The 4WD only comes down to A$750 at A$60 per day; clearing the rest costs a further A$15 per day, and no option covers a bogged vehicle.

A five-day floor applies to any same-branch hire, rising to seven days over Easter, Christmas and event weekends such as Bathurst in Sydney. Days are billed per calendar day, so the pickup day and the return day both count.

One-way hires carry a route-specific minimum — seven days for Sydney to Melbourne, 14 for Sydney to Perth, up to 28 for the longest crossings — plus a fee of A$200 between the eastern and southern capitals, or A$300 where Perth, Darwin, Broome or Alice Springs is involved.

The HiLITE, DeLITE, Highball and Double Down carry a sink and cold water, and nothing else: no toilet, no shower, and no heater or air-conditioning in the living area. Washing means campground facilities every day of the trip.

The five bathroom models are not fully independent either. Their reverse-cycle heating and air-conditioning runs only on a 240 V powered site, so a desert winter night or a tropical evening away from mains power is managed with a blanket or a fan.

No Mighty 2WD may leave sealed roads beyond well-maintained access roads under 12 kilometres leading to a commercial campground or major attraction. Beaches are off limits to every vehicle, ski access roads are closed 1 June to 30 September, and MightyLITE vans may not enter Tasmania at all.

The 4WD opens the unsealed network, but not unconditionally: named tracks such as the Gibb River Road or the Oodnadatta Track require nominating your route at the branch, and 300 kilometres a day are included before a A$0.55 per kilometre charge — or a A$299 unlimited package.

The Trustpilot figure is the closest thing to a market-wide number Mighty has, and it is genuinely Australia-weighted: two thirds of its reviews sit on Australian depots. It is still not an Australian score — the New Zealand branches contribute 129 reviews to the same 3.9.

It is also a managed profile. thl pays for the subscription and invites customers to review, which tends to lift volume and soften the average compared with a listing that only collects complaints.

The two platforms sample different moments. Google depot reviews are mostly written at handover, about the branch and the vehicle; Trustpilot entries arrive after the trip, and the recurring subjects on operators of this type are bonds, damage claims and refunds.

With seven depots, seasonal closures and a tiered bond, the actionable read is local: check the Google listing for your pickup city, and ask at the counter what triggers a deduction from the liability deposit and how its release is timed.
