Free camping by state

Queensland allows 20 hours at a highway rest area and Western Australia 24 — and they are not the same kind of rule. WA's is a statutory permission to camp; Queensland's is guidance on a page that says rest areas are not camping sites. Four separate bodies decide every patch of ground here, any one of them can stop you, and the fourth is the hire contract you signed. Every state's position, the council fines that are actually published, and what the companies charge on top.

Who the rental companies will actually put behind the wheel — age floors and ceilings, P plates and provisional licences, and what an overseas licence needs carried alongside it.

Under 21 & P plates

Six of the eleven companies here rent from 18 — but two of those six also require a full licence, which neither Queensland nor New South Wales issues before 20. The minimum age and the licence clause are separate tests, and for a P-plate driver the second one decides it. Every company's age floor, surcharge, accepted licence class and fleet restriction side by side, plus the upper limits at the other end of the same clause.

One-way fees & minimums

The fee travellers ask about is the smallest, most knowable number in an Australian one-way: A$165 to A$300 at the companies that publish one, once per hire, set by the pair of depots rather than the distance. What actually decides the booking is the minimum hire length that replaces the ordinary floor the moment the drop-off city changes — five days if the van comes back, seven to thirty-five if it does not. Two waivers remove the fee outright, neither of them touches the minimum, and every published figure and unpublished gap is here, company by company and route by route.

Gravel & unsealed roads

Eleven companies write the same sealed-road clause and then move the line somewhere different: 500 metres at one, 12 kilometres at six, and no published exception at all at two. Four-wheel drive is smaller than most travellers assume — seven models at four companies — and even those need written permission for the famous tracks.
