JUCY vs Maui

Both run Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown and no other depot, and both connect those three as one-way hires subject to approval, direction and fee. Maui adds a Queenstown location fee of NZ$270 through 31 March 2027 and NZ$280 from 1 April 2027. Every vehicle on either fleet is automatic, and both are sealed-road fleets by contract: JUCY prohibits unsealed roads outright bar a short access road to a commercial campground, and Maui permits access roads of under 12 kilometres to recognised campgrounds, attractions and ski fields.

What differs is whether the fleet answers the question or the model does. JUCY publishes seven campervans across two sub-brands, from a two-berth Toyota Estima to a 7.9-metre six-berth. Five of the seven carry the self-contained flag on JUCY’s own booking filter; the Crib and the Cloudbreak do not, and only the Big Kahuna heats the living space — which JUCY qualifies as working when connected to a powered site. Maui’s five categories vary on none of that: every one lists a shower and toilet and diesel living-area heating that runs without mains, and thl’s booking system marks all five certified self-contained, though only the Ultima Plus page says so. The consistency costs specificity, because you book a category rather than a make, model, year or layout.

For a summer North Island loop the gap is comfort. For the South Island in the cold months it is the trip, because a dashboard heater works while the engine runs and not otherwise. Overnight legality divides the same way: JUCY does not list the Crib or the Cloudbreak as self-contained, and the green-warrant standard in force since 7 June 2026 requires a permanently fixed toilet, so on either model you spend every night in a holiday park or at a site that takes a non-certified vehicle. Over ten nights those fees are the larger number — compare these two as a total trip cost rather than as a daily rate. One detail runs the other way: Maui names Crown Range Road among its prohibitions, where JUCY’s restriction is on unsealed roads and its named examples do not include it.
