Big Little Campers vs Maui

Both fleets are listed as self-contained throughout, which settles the question most New Zealand comparisons turn on. All three Big Little models are listed with a green warrant, and thl’s booking system marks every Maui category certified, though only the Ultima Plus page says so. Either way, the warrant on the vehicle you are handed is the evidence that counts. Neither company will let you off the seal. Big Little clears none of its three models for unsealed roads, and Maui permits only access roads under 12 kilometres to a recognised campground, major attraction or ski field.

The vehicles then have almost nothing in common. Big Little designs and builds three models in Auckland and hires them from two depots. Each sleeps two, or three on The Big One, whose rooftop bed is rated to 80 kilograms. Only the 6.4-metre Biggest One carries a diesel heater, an indoor hot shower and an induction hob. The two smaller models cook on a gas burner and heat on a plug-in 240-volt unit that works only at a powered site. Maui publishes five categories for two to six travellers across Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown, every one automatic, diesel-heated and fitted with a shower and toilet. The company says its standard vehicles leave the fleet before two and a half years. What a Maui booking secures is the category, not a make, model, year or layout.

That heating split is the sharp end of it. Fleet-wide certification lets you freedom camp on any Big Little booking, while the two smaller models can only be warmed at the powered site you were trying to avoid. Trip shape decides the rest. Big Little enforces a seven-day minimum, and a shorter search returns no results; Maui sells short hires, reaches Queenstown and takes parties of up to six. What Maui asks for that reach is card capacity at the counter. Low Road, the base option, carries NZ$7,500 of liability per claim, secured by a card authority at collection, and High Road removes it for NZ$65 a day through 31 March 2027 and NZ$67 after. Big Little takes its bond earlier and as a payment: NZ$5,000 on the two smaller models and NZ$7,500 on The Biggest One, due 35 days before the hire begins and refundable afterwards, and cleared by Premium cover at NZ$35 or NZ$50 a day.
