Both fleets are automatic throughout, and both agreements keep you on the seal. Crown Range Road, Skippers Road and Ninety Mile Beach are named exclusions in each set of terms, and both bar ski-field access roads between 1 June and 31 October. Neither is the company to hire for a gravel itinerary. What separates them is everything that happens after you stop driving.

Travellers Autobarn hires five petrol van conversions from Auckland and Christchurch, ranging from a Station Wagon with no bed and no kitchen up to the Hi5, which sleeps four across two doubles. No model carries a built-in heater. For pick-ups between May and September the company supplies a winter pack, and states that its electric heater works only at a powered campsite. Bedding and a cooking kit come with the campervan models as a mandatory living-equipment charge rather than an option; the Station Wagon includes no bedding, and neither it nor the Chubby Camper has a built-in cooker — the Chubby cooks on a portable gas cooker. Maui publishes five diesel motorhome categories from Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown, each of them listing an internal shower and toilet, a gas stove, a fridge-freezer, a solar panel and diesel living-area heating that runs without mains power. The company says a standard vehicle leaves the fleet before it is two and a half years old — but a booking secures a category, not a make, model, year or layout.

The sharper difference is legal rather than physical. Since 7 June 2026 a vehicle counts as self-contained in New Zealand only if it holds a green warrant, which requires a toilet fixed to the floor of the vehicle. Travellers Autobarn lists the Chubby, HiTop, Kuga and Hi5 as self-contained, and its terms effective 19 June 2026 tie the certificate on ‘certain campervans’ to a NZ$50 portable toilet issued at pick-up, with no warrant number, issue date or standard published. thl’s booking system marks every Maui category certified, and each model page lists a toilet and shower, though only the Ultima Plus page mentions certification; the warrant card on the vehicle you are handed is the evidence that counts. Freedom camping without one carries a NZ$400 infringement fee. That is not a quality judgement, it is a rule about where you may park overnight — and a van that has to return to a holiday park every night moves the campsite line of the budget, so weigh these two over the whole trip rather than by the day.
