Wendekreisen vs Maui

On paper these two agree more than either agrees with the budget end of this market. Both list every current category as certified self-contained — Wendekreisen on its own pages, Maui through thl’s booking system — with a shower, toilet, hot water and heating, and both include bedding. Both also carry 4.5 on Google and 4.1 on Trustpilot, although the Trustpilot samples are not comparable: Wendekreisen’s 39 entries are New Zealand only and sit at the two ends of the scale, while Maui’s 381 combine Australia with New Zealand and include invited reviews. The recurring complaint differs too — water entering around window seals and roof fittings in heavy rain at Maui, against electrical and heating faults appearing days into a trip at Wendekreisen. Freedom camping has needed a green warrant since 7 June 2026, and the warrant belongs to the vehicle rather than to the brand, so inspect it at handover either way.

What separates them starts inside the vehicle and ends at the road rules. Maui lists all five categories as automatic and says its standard motorhomes stay on fleet for less than two and a half years; at Wendekreisen the Budget 2 models are older manual LDV V80 vans, and only Koru 4 Freedom and the Koru Star range are automatic. Heating follows the same tier line, LPG on the Budget models and diesel on Koru and Koru Star, against diesel on all five Maui categories. The bigger difference is legal rather than mechanical. Both companies bar Ninety Mile Beach and Skippers Road, but Wendekreisen permits every public road it does not name, whereas Maui treats sealed roads as normal use and allows only access roads under 12 kilometres to a recognised campground, major attraction or ski field — with ski-field access barred between 1 June and 31 October. Ordinary gravel touring is not permitted in a Maui motorhome, and a named road at either company can leave you responsible for recovery and damage.

Geography runs the other way. Wendekreisen collects at Auckland and Christchurch only, with airport transfers, unlimited kilometres, road-user charges and one-way hire between those two depots included, while another city needs prior arrangement and a NZ$550 relocation surcharge. Maui adds Queenstown and connects all three depots by one-way hire, although a Queenstown booking carries a location fee of NZ$270 through 31 March 2027 and NZ$280 from 1 April 2027. The money secured at pickup differs in size and in what it costs: Wendekreisen makes cover compulsory at NZ$25 a day and takes a card imprint for the excess, NZ$2,500 for drivers aged 25 and over and NZ$5,000 at ages 21 to 24, while Maui’s included Low Road option records a card authority for NZ$7,500 at collection. Plan the route before the vehicle — a sealed itinerary finishing at a different airport from the one it started at points to Maui, and ordinary gravel outside the blacklist rules Maui out before anything else is compared.
