Campervan Hire Under 21 in Australia: Which Companies Accept P Plates

Each company publishes one minimum age for the whole country, and it applies to every driver named on the agreement rather than only the person who paid. A second driver below the floor is not permitted to drive under the agreement, whatever the booking says.

The number alone overstates what it opens. Campervan Village's 18 covers two-wheel-drives only; its four-wheel-drives require 21 and it offers no under-21 tier for one. Mighty's 18 reaches a named handful of models while the rest of its fleet, including its 4WD, sits at 21. Apollo is recorded here at 21, but its own documents disagree about its two smallest campervans: the age-eligibility clause omits the Hitop and Endeavour while a liability table appears to include them, so an under-21 booking on either is worth confirming in writing.

A quieter condition sits underneath the age. Camperman and Campervan Village both require twelve months' driving experience, and Spaceships requires the licence to have been held six months or more. A driver who passed their test three months ago clears every age clause in this article and still fails at three companies.

Queensland states the requirement directly: "You must be at least 20 years old to be eligible for an open driver licence." New South Wales publishes no equivalent age, but its hold periods produce the same result — three years from the first solo drive, landing at 20 at the earliest. Victoria's probationary period could not be confirmed from a readable official page for this article, and six of the eight state and territory authorities could not be read at all, so no figure is given for them here.

The consequence is that two of the companies advertising 18 also require a full licence, and in Queensland and New South Wales no one under 20 can satisfy both. Travellers Autobarn sets its minimum at 18 in clause 10.1 and requires "a valid full driver's licence (state, national or international)" in clause 9.1. Read together, those two clauses work for a customer holding a full licence issued outside Australia and not for a domestic one of the same age.

It also means the birthday is the wrong thing to count. The clock that governs a P-plate driver starts at the first provisional licence, not at birth: on New South Wales' published periods a driver who reached P1 at 19 rather than 17 is still on green plates at 22. Of the five companies whose floor is 21, only Star RV accepts a green P — Britz, Maui, Apollo and Cruisin Motorhomes all require a full or non-probationary licence at any age. Turning 21 adds one company to a P-plate driver's list. Coming off the plates adds six.

Every agreement here requires a licence "appropriate for the class of vehicle" and then names the classes it accepts. That second clause is what decides a domestic booking, and the eleven companies do not land anywhere near each other on it.

They also do not use the same words. Spaceships accepts an "unrestricted or probationary" licence, which admits both P stages. Star RV refuses "any probationary Licences, including a Red P Plate or a P1 Licence" while separately accepting "an Australian Green P (P2) Licence", so it reads "probationary" as meaning the first stage only. Camperman's restrictions section refuses "learner's permit and probationary licence holders" in one sentence, then accepts "provisional drivers" in the next on condition they "clearly display the appropriate provisional plates (P-plates)" on the campervan. Whether those two Camperman clauses describe different drivers or the same one is not something its terms explain, and the answer decides whether you collect the van. Get it in writing before paying.

Two companies charge for youth and both charge the same. JUCY's fee schedule carries an "under-age driving fee applicable for drivers between 18-21 years of age" at A$5 per young driver per day, and Campervan Village's policies page lists an under-21 surcharge at A$5 a day. JUCY's is charged per driver, so two under-21 drivers on a fourteen-day hire pay A$140 rather than A$70. Campervan Village's rental agreement conditions both eligibility and damage cover on that surcharge without ever stating its amount; the figure appears only on a separate policies page. No company in this market operates an under-25 tier, and no company publishes an age-loaded daily rate.

The bond does not move with age either. Travellers Autobarn's clause 26.1 preauthorises A$3,500 on the hirer's credit card whatever their age, and no company whose terms we read publishes an excess, liability or bond that varies by how old the driver is. The one place age does change the money at risk is the Campervan Village exclusion above, where an unpaid surcharge removes that driver's damage cover entirely.

What is more likely to stop an 18-year-old is the card the bond comes off. Travellers Autobarn's bond is preauthorised to "Your credit card" — the hirer's own — and a driver who has just turned 18 frequently holds a debit card and nothing else. Three companies stop at or just below 75, which is not an unusual age for a motorhome customer. JUCY's wording is the tightest: its terms require every authorised driver to be "under 75 years old", so 75 itself falls outside the band, where Campervan Village's and Star RV's limits include it. The mechanism at the top is the one that operates at the bottom — Campervan Village's damage-cover exclusions remove indemnity for use by a driver who "is more than 75 years of age", in the same list as its under-age clauses, so a ceiling can survive a confirmed booking as a condition of the cover rather than a bar on paying for it.
